Porters provide a vital service throughout the hospital. Bedford Hospital porters undertake a variety of duties including general portering, utility, postal, note and pharmacy portering.
All portering staff will be correctly dressed, in appropriate clean uniform and trained to a basic standard.
General porters are available 24 hours a day on bleep 356. They are responsible for patient transfers, specimen collection and delivery and collection of bloods.
Utility porters are available Monday to Friday between 8am and 4pm and are responsible for waste collection and grounds and garden maintenance.
Postal porters are available Monday to Friday between 8am and 4pm and are responsible for the delivery of post throughout the hospital twice daily. Collecting mail for transfer to Royal Mail included. A courier service is also provided. This provides deliveries to local surgeries on a twice daily basis. A second courier collects and delivers from Bedfordshire surgeries on a daily basis.
Notes porters are available Monday to Friday between 8am and 4pm and are responsible for delivering medical notes from the medical library to surgeries throughout the hospital.
Pharmacy porters are available on bleep 348 from Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm and are responsible for the delivery of pharmaceutical requests to wards twice daily. These include fluids, medication and controlled drugs.
The hospital’s main reception (Kempston Road) is staffed Monday to Friday between 8am and 4pm. Reception staff can give advice on ward locations, patient whereabouts, and surgeries.
