Tavistock Day Surgery unit consists of 25 trolley spaces, a nurse led pre-assessment clinic and an “admission on day of surgery” lounge. This unit gives pre and post-operative care for orthopaedic, general/ vascular surgery, ear, nose and throat (ENT), oral maxillo facial and gynaecology patients.
When patients arrive on the unit they will be greeted at reception and shown to their trolley space, here they will admitted by a qualified nurse. They will also be seen and assessed by an anesthetist and their surgeon and given the opportunity to ask any questions. Patients are then asked to wait in the reception area until they are prepared for theatre.

Prior to their scheduled theatre slot, patients will be asked to change into a gown and their dressing gown in the changing room. Clothing will be secured in patient lockers. Please do not bring valuables into hospital as we are unable to accept responsibility for these. A nurse will go through a checklist with patients and then escort them to the anaesthetic room where you will be greeted by the theatre staff.

Following their procedure, patients will awaken in the recovery area. Here they will be monitored closely by the recovery staff. Once the recovery staff feel that a patient is stable they will return to Tavistock Ward on the trolley with a theatre porter and qualified nurse.

On return to the ward you will have your observations monitored and wound checked. Unless there are any specific instructions you will be allowed to take sips of water progressing to tea/coffee and light refreshments (sandwiches/toast) once water is tolerated.

Most patients will need a minimum of two hours recovery time but this can vary depending on the surgical procedure and individual recovery times. Once patients meet set criteria we can discharge them home with the relevant documentation and advice. Sometimes there can be a delay in discharge waiting for surgeons to complete theatre sessions if they wish to see their patients before they go home.

Please note that all patients being discharged home following a general anaesthesia must make arrangements to be collected from the reception area of the ward by a responsible adult. They will also require care for at least twenty four hours – this will have been discussed at pre-assessment.
Admission on the day patients will go to an in-patient ward following their procedure. Staff will ensure belongings are brought up to the ward they are have been allocated.

Visiting Times

Tavistock ward is a busy day surgery unit with limited space. In order to respect the privacy and dignity of all patients it is with regret that we are unable to accommodate relatives, visitors, or friends during your stay. However, in the event that there are exceptional circumstances a prior arrangement can be discussed during your pre-assessment or with the sister/nurse in charge of the ward. An example of this would be vulnerable adults or patients with specific care needs. Patients will be booked in at reception and your family, carer or friend will be asked to return at a later time of the day to collect you following your discharge.

Please be aware that, for health and safety reasons, flowers and plants are not permitted on the ward.
