Description of the Ward:
Coronary Care Unit is situated on the second floor of the main ward block, behind Godber Ward at Bedford Hospital. The Coronary Care Unit has sixteen beds, and cares mainly for acute cardiac patients.
The Cardiology Unit is for both male and female patients with cardiac complaints, post Myocardial infarction, pacemaker implantation and post PCI.
Routine of what happens on the ward:
When you arrive on the ward, you will be greeted by a member of the nursing staff. If required you will be given oxygen therapy and pain relief.
Patients are under the care of one of the four consultant cardiologists during their stay and ward rounds are carried out every morning at 8.30am. Staff on the ward include six cardiac nurse practitioners and a cardiac outreach nurse.
The ward liaises closely with a team of cardiac support nurses who offer health education to those with MI and a cardiac rehabilitation programme.
The ward also enjoys close links with Papworth Hospital NHS Trust who carry out coronary angiography, emergency angioplasty and cardiac surgery.
Patients will be referred to our own cardiac catheteristion suite for pacemaker insertions, DC cardioversions, percutaneous coronary interventionand diagnostic angiography. The ward also has the facility to insert emergency temporary pacing wires and perform pericardiocentsis.
Visiting Times:
2.30pm – 8pm.
If you would like to assist with the care of your relative outside of normal visiting hours, please speak to the nurse in charge.
