Incident Status:
The Trust is committed to developing a culture of lifelong learning and establishing itself as a learning organisation. Our aim is to develop new ways of working in order to become an employer of choice that responds to the needs of its patients and community. A key element of this strategy is to ensure that staff are well trained and supported.
The Learning & Development Strategy group is responsible for determining workforce education priorities based on a collection of annual training needs based on service objectives, professional or legal requirements and risk management. The group also interprets national guidance and educational policy documents and monitors the effectiveness of education delivered across the Trust.
Learning is supported across the Trust through formal appraisals which provide the opportunity for cascading service objectives and agreeing team or individual objectives as well as identifying levels of skill, knowledge and ability.
PDPs form the outcome of the appraisal interview, clearly demonstrating the link between agreed objectives and gaps in knowledge and skills identified or necessary to achieve those objectives.
Education and training for all doctors within the Trust, including career development and pastoral care is overseen by the Post Graduate Medical and Dental Education Centre.
Active post registration development is encouraged to MSc level (or equivalent) based on development pathways which must focus on service needs, improvements to patient safety and the patient experience with the applicant obtaining rounded advice from their line manager, training and development advisers or identified higher education institutes.
The annual internal training programme is aligned to Trust, divisional and department objectives with one of the key drivers being the delivery of quality patient care.
Programmes are delivered by specialists in the relevant field and are prepared to support multi-professional learning and include statutory training, health and safety, clinical skills, management and leadership development, communication skills and IT skills.
All new staff attend an induction programme which introduces them to the Trust and essential topics such as health and safety, infection control, fire safety, manual handling, and equality and diversity.
We aim to continue developing our unregistered workforce through the provision of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) and European Computer Driving License and have built up excellent links with our Train to Gain skills brokers who scope provision of such essential training as and when the need arises.
The Trust is committed to equality and fair treatment, particularly through opportunities for appraisal, the design of personal development plans and access to training and education programmes.
All learning events should be booked centrally through the education and development department or Post Graduate Medical and Dental Education Centre.
