Plastic Surgery

Bedford Hospital offers a top class plastic & reconstructive service. Our plastic surgery service is run between Bedford Hospital and the plastic surgery inpatient unit at the Lister Hospital, Stevenage.

Clinics, minor surgery and day surgery sessions are held at Bedford Hospital, patients requiring procedures of a more serious nature will be admitted to the dedicated beds at the Lister Hospital, and then return for their follow-up appointment at Bedford Hospital. We work very closely with our colleagues at the Lister Hospital which ensures that together, we provide a large and multi-talented team across Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire. We also work closely with our colleagues in dermatology to provide a well established Laser Treatment Centre.

Services

We have three specialist consultants, two of whom also work at the sub-regional plastic surgery unit at Stevenage. Working closely with the consultants is Susan Walker, a highly experienced nursing sister and a dedicated team who specialise in minor and day surgery.

We also have a dedicated hand therapist, Mrs Jane Seymour, with a vital role in post-operative treatment of our hand patients. Jane also runs a supported hand clinic for the assessment and treatment of referrals from the accident and emergency department. There are dedicated and highly efficient outpatient staff in the OPD who are experienced in the full range of our referrals and in dressings care and supporting ‘office surgery’’.

We welcome referrals from community health professionals for conditions such as:

  • skin cancers;
  • children’s congenital deformity (eg prominent ears, hand deformity, birthmarks);
  • hand problems (injuries, arthritis, lumps, pain, carpal tunnel etc)
  • burn injuries or scars;
  • breast hypertrophy or deformity.

We also care for patients with a complex injury who have been referred from our specialist colleagues. This may include:

· Limb trauma;

· Breast reconstruction;

· Pressure sores;

· Other areas which require a ‘team’ approach.

Laser Treatment Centre

Another major area of our service is in the unique Laser Treatment Centre at Bedford Hospital. Work in this centre, founded some 20 years ago, is carried out in close collaboration with our dermatology colleagues. This department, which has been visited by many other hospitals, including University teaching hospitals, offers state of the art laser therapy with a range of machines unsurpassed in the UK. We offer treatments for birthmarks, difficult skin cancers and troublesome viral warts.
