Welcome to the ophthalmology department, we are a large friendly professional team who care for patients with conditions of the eye. We are situated at Rye Close in Bedford Hospital South Wing and the department is managed by the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital Foundation Trust.

Acute Eye Clinic: 01234 792643 (calls to this number are triaged by a registered nurse who will be able to provide advice, however, please bear in mind that this is a very busy line)
There are a number of consultant ophthalmologists working in the ophthalmology department:
We also have two visiting specialists:
Mr Newman, vitreo retinal consultant ophthalmologist from Addenbrookes who attends on a Wednesday morning and Mr Akay, contact lens practitioner who attends on Monday afternoons. There is also a team of orthoptists. This team deals with muscle imbalance of the eye and run various weekly sessions.
The department also boasts a 14 strong nursing team lead by Sister Mary Masih, clinical nurse specialist and department manager.
Acute Clinic
A clinic providing a fast track service via GPs, Opticians, A&E. Enabling patient with urgent eye problems to be triaged and seen promptly where required. This clinic has a direct line for patients requiring advice but please bear in mind that it is very frequently used and may be busy: 01234 792643.
Eye Theatre Reception
We are proud to provide an excellent day case suite for patients requiring eye surgery, which is managed by eye clinic team, ensuring continuity of care.
Minor Operations Clinic
Patients with minor complaints are brought directly into this clinic. If suitable, a patient will have their operation in the department, and be able to go home on the same day.
Glaucoma Clinic
Patients are referred to this clinic by their GP or optician if Glaucoma is suspected. Visual field tests and an examination is are conducted and treatment offered.
Paediatric Clinics
These clinics are run in the paediatric outpatients department which is located opposite the entrance to Cygnet wing. The clinics are run by Mr Nithy, Mrs Hingorani and a paediatric nurse.
Cataract Clinics
These clinics are run throughout the week for assessment prior to surgery. At the clinic, patients will complete a fitness test, have an ultrasound scan called an A-scan and have the opportunity to ask any questions about their surgery.
Fluroscein Clinics
These clinics are held every Wednesday and are run by a registered nurse and a photographer.
