Coronary care unit is situated on the second floor of the main ward block, behind Godber ward at Bedford Hospital. Coronary care unit has fourteen beds, and cares mainly for acute cardiac patients.

When you arrive on the ward, you will be greeted by a member of the nursing staff. If required, you will be given oxygen therapy and pain relief.

Patients are under the care of one of the four consultant cardiologists during their stay and ward rounds are carried out every morning at 8.30am. Staff on the ward include six cardiac nurse practitioners and a cardiac outreach nurse.

The ward liaises closely with a team of cardiac support nurses who visit the ward to offer health education to those with MI and to invite patients to our cardiac rehabilitation programme which is run by ward staff.

The ward also enjoys close links with Papworth Hospital NHS Trust who carry out coronary angiography and emergency angioplasty.

Patients will be referred to our own cardiac catheteristion suite for pacemaker insertions, DC cardioversions, percutaneous coronary intervention and diagnostic angiography. The ward also has the facility to insert emergency temporary pacing wires and to perform pericardiocentsis.
